The Pro Organo Radio Series
A weekly half-hour series of organ literature hosted and performed by Frederick Hohman
[ 1977-1979 ]

NOTES FROM FRED: In 2009, some 30 years after this radio series was produced, the original open-reel master tapes were re-opened and digitally transferred at Zarex HD Studio for further preservation.

From 1977 to 1979, I recorded and compiled my organ performances into a weekly radio series of 30-minute organ recitals. In addition to playing the music, I also served as program host and producer. The series was called PRO ORGANO, and it was syndicated across the USA to about 20 affiliates with National Public Radio, including all affiliates with Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), WRUR-FM Rochester NY, WNED-NY Buffalo NY, WBUR-FM Boston MA, KTEP-FM El Paso TX, WCNY-FM Syracuse NY, WOSU-FM Columbus OH, WWNO-FM New Orleans, LA, and KFUO-FM St. Louis MO, among others.

Pro Organo - the radio series - pre-dated the CD label by the same name, which I adopted as a brand label name in 1985 (See www.proorgano.com for the catalog of the Pro Organo CD label.). The majority of the Pro Organo Radio Series was recorded on Sunday afternoons, using the 2-manual and pedal, 31-rank Schlicker Organ (1970) of the First Lutheran Church of Lyons, New York. This venue had, and still has, this fine organ and an especially fine acoustic for organ music. Occasionally, I recorded some selections at alternate venues when I would travel throughout America to perform as a guest recitalist.

These radio broadcast recordings were made at the outset of my career as an concert organist. It is remarkable that the original broadcast recordings, made in an open-reel analog tape format, were found in 2009 to be still intact after 30 years. These now sound far better than the original through applying advanced digital audio remastering techniques.

Selections from these radio programs will be posted here at frederickhohman.net as MP3 files, and links - when they appear below - will allow you to download the audio files. Since not all of the organ literature heard in the series is in the public domain, it is not possible to make the copyrighted selections available here for free download; however, many of the public domain musical works shall be available here as free MP3 downloads.

The synopsis and repertoire listing for the series is shown below. Whenver an MP3 download of a selectioni is available, the music selection shall contain a link. Just click on the link to start the download. Unless otherwise indicated, all selections were recorded at the First Lutheran Church of Lyons, New York.

Please note that not all of the 26 episodes in this series have been transferred yet. Those episodes which have been completed are shown below.

The discipline and regimen of recording between 5 to 20 minutes of music each week for broadcast was fine training, and was helpful later as I proceeded to make CD recordings. The recorded performances on the Pro Organo radio series were rarely edited, and were almost always done in "one take." This was a condition imposed by necessity, because the recording medium of the day was open-reel analog tape. The tape speed chosen was slow by professional standards, at only 7.5 inches per second. The slow tape speed made precision editing difficult, and so complete takes were always favored over what would have been tedious tape editing. The fidelity of the recordings made at this slow tape speed were astounding. The majority of the series was made with a Revox A700 half-track stereo version deck, the audiophile little brother to the fully professional (and much more expensive) Studer B67 tape transport, and the microphone set-up included finely tuned microphones from Austria and Sweden. - FH
